A womans approach to marriage...

Posted by fortymaster on , under | comments (0)

A woman approaches marriage like a lioness getting ready to kill its prey. They lay in wait till the prey slips up and in turn they attack. Not being able to withstand the ferocious and vicious attack we surrender. Meanwhile the rest of the preys clan moves on. This is an epidemic that men face in todays world of big weddings and that damn Oprah. They stop and then frisk us till we just want to be jailed and not deal with the questioning. Cono, take me to Death Row now...I rather have a string tied around my balls and get tossed from a roof bungee style. They use mind games and get in good with a mans mother. They trick her into thinking that shes going to treat him like mommy did. Yeah right.. Old school wives would give you a transition period where they actually fed you till you grew old and you would deal with the nagging. Nowadays it's all about the size of the rock and how many people you can invite. To think that a man has no say in this event. Maybe that's a good thing but i wouldn't mind a little porn playing in the backround while we watch a fight on that day. Migente (my people) have a Happy New Year...I'll be working tonight so screw you lol...1..40master

Perhaps now is not the best time to break into the music business with CD sales declining. A new report released by Billboard yesterday indicates that album sales were down 15% when compared to 2006. Record executives are also projecting a further decline in 2008. Will the music industry become free?

Hip Hop's Top 30 Most Slept On Songs In 2007

Posted by Ras on Friday, December 28, 2007 , under | comments (0)

In 2007, it was estimated that over 350,000 albums were released in the United States alone. At EG Radio we understand that it is very easy to miss tuning into some good Hip Hop especially if your restricted to the same old rotation on FM Radio. As a result, we have compiled a list of the hottest Undeground, and Established artists and their songs that did not quite get the time of day in 2007, but never the less deserve the recognition!!

Don't expect Britney or Diddy to be on this list. This is official talent here that is not manufactured. Instead you will find the next list of budding stars, and some who are already well known. Since every other blog usually covers the African American Hip Hop Market with their budding stars, I am going to focus on the Latin Hip Hop scene for 2008. My personal picks for the next dude to blow on this scene is Lindoro Entertainment/Universal Music Group's artist Jimmy Flavorr, Interscope Recording Artists Omar Cruz and Joell Ortiz. Joell had a strong 2007 overall and created the buzz he needed. While Jimmy Flavorr and Omar Cruz hit hard in the 4th quarter with some banging street singles that are pumping in clubs and on radio nationwide. On the Latin Hip Hop mixtape scene - expect to hear alot more from Myk Gunz, The Ave Records 950 Plus coming with a new album, and our lady Mala Reignz who will be grinding with some new projects next year.

So rather than posting a list of the Most Popular songs of 2007 like every other site is doing, we opted to publish the Top 30 Hottest Songs in Hip Hop that you probably have not heard, but you should absolutely hear! This list will soon be accompanied by the actual songs by this weekend (12/29/2007) when Ras hits the wheels of steels and mixes these up. Click the Read More link below or the title of the post to review the entire list. Let us know if we missed any songs here.

Aasim - Go
Al Fatz - It Came Down (Ive Done Came Up!)
Alaine - Lovers Prayer

Bishop feat. I See On - U Dont Know Me
Elvis White Feat. Akon - I Promise You
Evidence - Im On That
Fabulous feat. Junior Reid - Gangstas Dont Play
Ghostface feat. Chrisette Michelle - Slow Down
Graph - Glo In The Dark
Jasmine Lopez - All Good
J-Didda - Bishop is Crossing
Jimmy Flavorr - La Bomba
Joell Ortiz featuring Akon - Keep On Calling
Junior Read - Funny Man
Keith Murray feat. Junior & Tyrese - Nobody Do It Better
Kim Davis feat Sizzla - Hush
L.A featuring Akon - On My Trail
Mala Reignz - BX Till I Die
Mully Man - We Good There
Myk Gunz - Brooklyn
Notch - Que Te Pica (What Tickles You?) - The Dominican Version
Omar Cruz - Hang With My Dogs
Saul Pagan - Nice & Slow
Scarface - Girl You Know
Smitty - Died in You Arms
Swizz Beats - Top Down
Talib Kweli - Hostile Gospel
Thirstin Howl - Barrio Nueva York
Trina - Clear it Out
T-Weaponz - New Ish (Remix)
Young Buck - Riding Down The Freeway

It Is Better To Give Than to GET!

My people, mi gente...Christmas has come and gone and I'd like to let everyone know how I spent Christmas Eve. As you all are aware EG Radio collected a box of toys at our Reunion Toy Drive Event at Forget About It Sports Bar and I had the pleasure of

delivering the toys to The Lutheran Medical Center in Sunset Park.
I woke up bright and early and got myself and Lil Lynx ready to go to the hospital. My daughter is quite spoiled by her grandparents and I wanted her to understand the importance of reaching out to others in your community to uplift their spirits while they are in a unfortunate situation.

As she watched me pack the box into my car she picked up a Baby Bratz doll and jumped up and said " Ooh, Ooh Mommy please can I have this one!" I pried the doll out of her hands and said “No, this is for the children at the hospital" and I put it back in the car and headed out.

On the way to the hospital Lil Lynx was trying to run game on her Mama “But Mommy, I love the Bratz doll, she is so cute. Oh I would take care of her and love her lots Mom. I really would...Mom? Pleeeease" I went into this long lecture about how it is better to give than to receive and how she was lucky enough and healthy enough to be able to spend Christmas at home with myself and the rest of the family and these children are not so lucky and we want to put a smile on their face and maybe they won't feel so bad about being in the hospital for Christmas.

She didn't respond and I just sighed. I figured she wasn't paying attention to anything I said. We arrived at the hospital and Lisa from Public relations met me in the lobby and placed the box of toys on a wheelchair and escorted us to the pediatric unit where we met the most adorable five year old girl.
The little girl (let’s call her Sweety) was happy to see us and was happy to take some pictures even though she was in a lot of pain. We presented her with the Cinderella purse sunglass and lipstick set and she tried it on right away and she said thanks.

My daughter pulled on my sleeve and asked if we could give her one more gift. I agreed and my daughter ran to the toy box and came back hiding the toy behind her back. Sweety started to giggle and said “What is that? Is that for me?” My daughter whipped out the very same Bratz doll she had wanted for herself. Well, Sweety’s mouth flew open and she said “Oh my God, It’s the Bratz Baby Doll, thank you, thank you “

She posed for another photo and called her Grandmother to join us. Her Grandmother and mother asked me to thank everyone at Egradio.

We said good-bye and we were heading out the door when Sweety called out “Thank you so much, you made me really, really happy today!” Then she called us back in to sing "Feliz Navidad" with the music therapist who was going around room to room singing Christmas songs for the children.

My daughter and I said bye to Lisa and she promised to send us the pictures. (Thanks Lisa for everything, you were great) As we walked towards the car my daughter pulled on my coat sleeve and said “Mommy, I’m glad we came and it is really better to give than to get, did you see how happy she was. I hope she gets better.” “Me too hunny, me too” I said as I felt the lump in my throat grow and my eyes fill with tears of joy. I was so proud of my baby.

Thank you to everyone who came out and supported the reunion/toy drive event and donated toys. Thank you Emma of E2k Magazine for donating a bag full of stocking stuffers and for taking out the time to come out to our event and helping serve food. Thank you to my cousin Angie for helping to serve food as well without breaking a nail. I know how challenging that is for you..lol..
Until Next Year….

Don’t Overweight hate. Participate and grab a plate in 2008!! Happy Happy New Year mi gente….

E.G Radio Online is in the midst of a Hostile takeover...

Ace Andretti( from the mix-tape hour fame) is planning to overthrow Ras from the top post of E.gradioonline. Sources say that Ace has been planning this move ever since he got rejected by a groupie at some event. The Daily news has confirmed that a character named Myk Jones (The spanish George clueless)is helping him from the inside. A call made to the offices of lynx Garcia went unanswered. My guess is that shes protesting the trans fat ban. Dennis (fortymaster) has been implicated in this plot. How does a guy whos so stupid that he thought the Jena 6 was a new R and b group get involved? One will never know. Ras is scheduled to have a press conference tommorrow morning to speak out on his feelings on this story. Insiders say that he will torture the press with his drunken style business speeches he likes to make and then address this issue. We will keep you informed as to what happens...Sikeeeeeeee

2007 Case Study By Nielson Soundscan On The Music Industry

Posted by Ras on , under | comments (0)

This is a rare but inside view straight from Nielson Soundscan analyzing the music industry. This is a power point deck that I stumbled across that illustrates some high impacting facts surrounding the Music Industry. Specifically the decline in CD sales, and the increase in Digital Downloads and Ringtones. Most of the data is based on 2006 sales data, but there are 2007 comparisons included. This is a must read for the serious music professional who is in this game.

Disability is the new welfare...

Posted by fortymaster on , under | comments (0)

I'm sad to report that there is a disturbing trend going on in the hispanic community. My people have migrated over from welfare to what we call S.S.I (Supplemental Security Income). S.S.I is a Federal income supplement program funded by general tax revenues (not Social Security taxes). It is designed to help aged, blind, and disabled people, who have little or no income; and it provides cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter.

I know this because even I have tried applying for this program with no success. However - today I see abled bodies flocking to the mental health clinic faster than a has been rapper going to G-Unit. A phantom friend of mine shaved his mustache ala Hitler and said he was hearing voices with French accents. It must be tough building up a resume when your only real work experience was a summer job back in 1986. This will only lead to hanging out in a Bodega(Spanish Grocery Store) one day.

Say what you want about Mexicans but atleast they come to work although they may get mugged by Blacks and Puerto Ricans. Can we atleast hand out flyers or collect 5 cent refund cans like the Chinese do in Sunset Park, Brooklyn? I'm not a racist just a realist, we are the system so lets make it work for us. The point I'm trying to make is that if you can work an I-pod or a cell phone then you not disabled just lazy meng.

Jay Z Steps Down as Head of Def Jam

Posted by Ras on Tuesday, December 25, 2007 , under | comments (0)

As I predicted 2 weeks ago, Jay Z has moved on from Def Jam and will no longer be running the company as President. This is after several weeks of renegotiation that took place to try and get Jay Z to stay on board. Inside sources at Def Jam say he wanted too much money, and considering the amount of lay offs they had to process this year - it was too much to keep him on board.

However, Jay Z remains positive and released a statement earlier this morning:

"I've been incredibly fortunate to have served as president of such a culturally-defining label as Def Jam over the last three years," Hov said via a statement. "During that time, I've had the pleasure of working with many of the world's most dynamic artists and many of the most dedicated and talented executives in the music business today, including [IDJMG Chairman/ CEO] Antonio "L.A." Reid. But now it's time for me to take on new challenges. I am pleased to have had the opportunity to build upon the Def Jam legacy, helping to move the company into a new era of artistic success."

LA Reid also commented saying:

"Jay made it clear to us that he feels the time has come to take on different challenges in his life. While we regret his decision to move on, we certainly respect it. Since Jay joined us as President of Def Jam in 2005, we have all benefited from his leadership, sense of spirit and invaluable friendship, "said Reid. "While he will continue to be one of our signature artists, he will nonetheless be missed in this executive capacity. The entire Island Def Jam family joins me in wishing him the very best in all of his future business endeavors."

2007's Most Controversial & Best Moments in Hip Hop (The Year In Review)

Posted by Ras on Monday, December 24, 2007 , under , | comments (0)

This year was an interesting and eventful year for Hip Hop, but also one that awakened the Hip Hop community. 2007 was the year of the Album Leaks and the year where we officially acknowledge that this game has shifted online. We saw Hip Hop album leaks from nearly every major release debut weeks before the official release. To add insult to injury, the leaks proved to increase CD sales in their first week in the cases of both 50 Cent and Kanye West as they battled for the Billboard top spot.

Rappers continued to stay highly controversial in 2007. I mean what would Hip Hop be without headlines from rappers? However - unlike the previous years, nearly every one arrested resulted in some jail time of over 1 day. While others like Foxy Brown cried behind bars in regret for what she has done during the Thanksgiving holidays while spending several months behind bars. Add to the list our man Prodigy of Mobb Deep who ended the year with teaching his son how shoot a gun just in case Saigon breaks into their house while he does his 3 and a half year bid. Who can forget Remy Ma, who allegedly blasted her best friend and became the Industry's most feared female emcee for the year. Bottom line - it was an arresting year, but hopefully the lessons can be learned in 2007 on behalf of those who already did their bids this year.

For the music business, 2007 was the worst year ever! Hip Hop shifted its hustle online while CDs, Mixtapes, and even MySpace quickly went out of style within the Hip Hop Community. Did I say MySpace? Yes - that is correct. MySpace was 2006's phenomenon and most used tool for the music industry and recording artist. In 2007 - FaceBook combined with YouTube was the killer marketing trend and most artists went straight to YouTube with their videos, and music. The Hip Hop Blogosphere also ruled how the industry and major news stations reported on and reacted upon anything to do with Hip Hop. Gone are the days of hearing FM radio or the 10 o'clock news for the latest in Entertainment. On with the days of logging into top Hip Hop blogs like ExtravaGangsta Radio, HoodHype, NahRight, and RealTalk NY hitting you with news, music, interviews, and video the minute it happens.

Record Executives like Universal Music's Doug Morris (pictured left) could still not figure out a way to capitalize from the online model and they publicly embarrassed themselves and their companies when they spoke to the press about the current challenges with file sharing. Meanwhile, record executives were supportive of The RIAA's spending on continued file sharing lawsuits against peer to peer file sharers, and most recently non for profit charities for allegedly illegally downloading music.

Who could forget the death of the mix tape this year? 2007 was the year where the Hip Hop industry finally saw the death of the mixtape hustle. Since the bust of DJ Drama in early January of 2007, many DJs went underground, and there were less people checking for new mix cd's on the streets. However - this event naturally gave birth to an incredible surge of file sharing of mix tapes online where we saw nearly every mixtape posted on every Hip Hop Blog. In most cases, the mix tapes were released just hours after they hit the streets, and in other case they went straight to the web. Music as we know it and hear it today - became free in 2007. Whether artists, labels, or Mixtape DJs want to acknowledge it or not - it is the mere reality of what happened in 2007. This doesn't mean the death of the music industry however? The prospects of marketing, distributing, and profiting from music are far more optimistic than ever before. While CD sales were down, Ringtones and Digital Downloads were up and are now the key trends and sources of revenue for some labels, and artists.

To help you to further understand the entire year, I compiled a list of key milestones and events that took place in our industry. The list is in chronological order. The events are those which are most pivotal and news worthy events that impacted Hip Hop, Our Culture, The Web, The Music Industry, and ExtravaGangsta Radio in 2007. Many of the articles are linked, and those without links can be found by clicking on the month in which the event occurred. Enjoy the links, and stay tuned for our audio version of this list with commentary debuting on 12/28/2007 in our weekly podcast section of our site. Reggaeton Has Died, So What Do Latins In Hip Hop Do Now?

Posted by Ras on , under , | comments (0)

Although many people involved in the Reggaeton genre hate to discuss this, I have to officially say that the industry is no longer embracing the Reggaeton Genre like they used to. Unlike several years ago when Major Radio stations changed their formats to be more Latin based with Reggaeton Music, the opposite is now starting to happen. In fact, I quote my brother DJ Sincero - one of Latin Hip Hop's mixtape DJs - as saying "Reggaeton is now going underground". It also appears that several Reggaeton stations are now switching their formats to support a better variety of Latin Based programming in the New York City, and Miami areas. I have even heard radio promoters indicate that Program Directors do not want to put Reggaeton or DemBow type of music in their rotation.

For the Reggaeton Artist, this presents a slue of difficulties. It has confused the Latin Community of artists as well. Its tough enough that latinos already struggle to achieve mainstream success in the Urban market. In fact, I am seeing Reggaeton Artists re branding themselves as Latin Hip Hop Artists, and they no longer want to be associated with Reggaeton.

My man Capicu is great example of that. During the Reggaeton era of popularity, CapiCu did Reggaeton Style and Latin Hip Hop tracks. Now that this genre has died, you will hear him spit more English with a twist of Spanish thereby creating a Latin Hip Hop type of track. No matter what though - the kid is hot and extremely versatile. Yet - his marketibility as a Latin Artist in Hip Hop has yet to catapult him to mainstream or household name success.

I can go on and on about several other Latin Hip Hop artists who should be buzzing, but I will keep it brief. Some others worthy of mention is my brother Jimmy Flavorr who is currently signed to Lindoro Entertainment/Universal Music. Our peoples T-Weaponz, Temperamento, 950 Plus, Alvare, La Bruja, Barbara La Guerrera, Mala Cara Music, Big Lou, Myk Gunz, Omar Cruz, and many more. All of these cats have proven success in the Hip Hop and Reggaeton genres as Latin Artists. Yet - you probably have never heard of them on a Major Hip Hop publication? However - Joell Ortiz managed to get his share of success and in front of the media - and even in with his current position - he has yet to prove he make a hit that will achieve mainstream success.

So where do Latins in Hip Hop go now? Perhaps they go back underground and release their tracks digitally till the next Big Pun comes about. Maybe we continue to hear them on ExtravaGangsta Radio like we have been hearing for the last 2 years, or maybe we just let Fat Joe be the only Latino in Hip Hop take the crown and just give up?

I am at a loss here, with what is next. However - we know today that the talent is official in the Latin Hip Hop Community. More importantly we are largest growing population in the world. So with so much opportunity, why aren't latino artists blowing up like they should? Every now and then we get a cat like Omar Cruz who puts it down and is killing the Internet with his new song and video "Hang With My Dogs". However, perhaps our problem is being able to market ourselves in the music business. Tell us what you think are the next steps for Latinos in Hip Hop?

My highschool mascot was a gerbal. Memories just in time for the holidays.

Posted by fortymaster on , under | comments (0)

I went to a small highschool with the one and only Ras. We didn't have any field for sports and our teams usually sucked Most of my school friends and I majored in drinking alcohol and smoking weed. Our school mascot was a gerbal and we didn't have any cheerleaders. I remember i tried out for the JV baseball team and made it. I beat out a few geeks and a guy in a wheelchair. Our coach was optimistic but we knew we stunk even before our baseball seaaon started.
Our practices were held in a a city park near our school that was a hotbed for drugs and prostitution. It explains why our coach was missing in action half the time. It's hard enough catching a line drive while a hooker performs a service on your third base coach. We were 0 and 10 when our manager decided we need some inspiration. He brought in Fitness guru Richard Simmons to try and motivate us. All it did was make us worse and our Dear mascot went missing. Poor lil guy must of thought he was going to fudge heaven. Anyway, we never won though that season instilled in us a sense of humor. Wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas and Happy New year...40Master

More troubles with Remy Ma as if her current charges and denied request to tour in Europe was not enough. Her alleged victim and former friend Makeda Barnes-Joseph, files a $10 million dollar civil law suit against Remy Ma and Universal Music. The suit names the rapper's record companies, including Universal Music Group and Sure Shot Recordings, as defendants, alleging they encouraged Remy Ma to engage in violent behavior as part of her image. Young Berg Arrested For Smoking Weed In Miami

Seems like there is an active pursuit to lock up rappers with drug habits in Miami this week. First Pitbull was locked up for DUI, now Rapper Young Berg was recently bagged in Miami today as he was caught smoking weed. The arrest took place on the set of the video for singer Ray J.'s new single "Sexy Can I" from his forthcoming release All I Feel, which features Yung Berg. For the full story click here.

FBI Confiscated $400K from man, who is charged with no crime

Posted by Ras on , under | comments (0)

Perhaps this is the real Frank Lucas or one of his counterparts that skated from the police in the early 70s. However - Luther Ricks is either a hustler, or someone who grinded hard to save up 400k!! 2 robbers broke in to Luther RIcks home, one of them stabbed his son. He shot and killed one of them defending his home. Even though the robbers didn't get to the $402,767 that he had in a safe, the FBI refuses to give it back until he proves he made it, because they found marijuana in the home. Even though he has been cleared of all charges!

How To: 25 Popular Desktop Apps and Their Free Online Alternatives

Posted by Ras on , under | comments (0)

We always talk about music now being free, and it should be no surprise that certain software is free in the form of shareware. However - as Microsoft tries to sell you a CD of Microsoft Office, and Windows Vista today, is it worth spending a few hundred bucks?

There are great alternatives out there in the form of web apps, and best of all - they are free!! With Linux being an alternative to Windows as a Free Operating System that is gaining market share on the desktop market place, it is only a matter of time that web applications will replace CD installations. Just like digital is now replacing the CD medium in music. By going online, you can access many of the desktop app functionalities you need without shelling out a cent.

Link: Judge Denies Remy Ma's Request To Travel To Europe

Posted by Ras on , under | comments (0)

According to recent reports, Remy Ma and her lawyer tried to get approval from a Judge to tour overseas and the request was denied. Even after her lawyer explained that the tour would bring Remy Ma approximately 40k in a 5 city tour and that she is having trouble making money in the states. The judge still denied the request. It looks like Remy Ma is not going to be acting so tough in a couple of months when they lock her ass up. She burned bridges with Fat Joe, and 50 Cent is not signing her. Where else is she going to go to make money? I would not be surprised if her lawyer bails on her because she can't make enough money to pay him. For the full story click on XXL's article here.

Rapper BoneCrusher Still Battling The Bulge With New DVD

Posted by Ras on , under | comments (0)

I spotted this story on AllHipHop.Com. You have to respect Bonecrusher's hustle here for being on his grind outside of the music business and moving to Hollywood. He took a problem with weight and turned into a positive while making money.

After breaking the record on VH1's Celebrity Fit Club for "Biggest Individual Weight Loss," Atlanta bred rapper Bone Crusher has teamed up Dr. Ian Smith to help other plus-size people to lose weight with a new fitness DVD. "Battle of the Bulge" is an instructional fitness DVD that offers work-outs for plus sized people to get in shape with exercises targeted to improve a person’s health and mobility. This is surely a sign that music is not and should not be the only source of revenue for artists these days. Bonecrusher came out with 2 albums and only 1 hit. However - he has been on screen more than rappers who have put out 5 albums and have been in the game for 10 years. Big up to BoneCrusher on getting his Phat Hustle on!! 2007: The Music Industry by the Numbers

MTV breaks down how well Music did in the year 2007 which was the worst 12-month period the music industry has ever seen. In it they joke about the numbers related to some releases, included some from Soulja Boy and 50 Cent as follows:

»Total worth of 50 Cent's "I'll retire if Kanye West beats me" promise, if you held it in one hand and a quarter in the other: 25 cents
» Despite realizing that, the percent of my entire being with which I hoped it would be true: 100

» Amount of feet my jaw dropped when I was informed what Soulja Boy's "Crank That" was really about: 5

» Number of times that fear was brought on by the phrase "50 Cent is filming a live concert a couple of floors below us, and he's not happy": 1

Don't be mad E.g is hiring...

Posted by fortymaster on , under | comments (0)

Tiss the seaon to be hiring.. You must atleast have a G.E.D or have a street diploma. Packing heat is not required and box-cutters are optional. I will not apply because im highly unmotivated and i spend my free time watching Maury. Those D.N.A tests are entertaining and i like it when the babymomma runs off the stage and throws herself on the floor. Anyway, there will be a hood physical to test your stamina. God knows which rapper will lose it on the red carpet. You must enjoy the aroma of weed and must know ebonics. If you do not have a street name one will be provided. Make sure to bring some change in case you have to interview a rapper in prison. Do not pay any attention to this blog posting, it's a joke.. Happy Holidays...

Video & Link: The Old Music Business Is Dead, & Opportunity Is Better Than Ever!

Posted by Ras on Wednesday, December 19, 2007 , under , | comments (0)

"The meteor's hit, the dinosaurs have all died and now it's time for whoever's next to take over," said Fall Out Boy bassist/lyricist Pete Wentz of the wide open future he sees for the music industry.

CEO Doug Morris of Universal Music (Pictured Left) must be nervous this year. Especially when MTV has come out to finally acknowledge that the old Music Business is dead. And would someone tell the folks at Universal that their Youtube Channel should allow their video content to be embeddable on web sites. Simply put - they are losing exposure of their artists worldwide and on the web every time they do this. This is just more evidence that their interests are not in favor of the artists. They want to sell the videos instead when no one buys videos.

On a positive note - I have never felt so excited about this business. In the final edition of MTV's perspective on the future of the music business, several key points were made around the death of the Old Music Business, but the Birth of a New One. A key point made in the video below was that downloading, ringtones, concert sales, and music licensing is significantly up despite CD Sales going down. So it really does Record Labels and Independent Artists to focus more on their digital distribution channels than the traditional channels. Stay tuned, as I will post part 2 of my recommendations for labels to survive in this Digital Era. Click here for MTV's article.

Posted by fortymaster on , under | comments (0)

Its ironic that there is a Dead End right next to a cementary in America?

It is equally ironic that Evil Knievel and Ike Turner died in the same year. One endured numerous bruises, broken body parts and pain while the other dished it out. Before Joe Jackson beat his kids till they bled out money, Ike Turner beat the crap out of his then wife Tina into superstardom.

Ike was indeed the ultimate hitmaker in many ways. Some even say that he and his group at the time invented Rock and Roll or as Tina called it "Get hit with a rock till you rolled over and play dead". Phil Spector produced the Ike and Tina Revue before he literally started the "he put a gun to my head" antics and killed a woman.

Life is wacky and its 6 degrees of separation are even wackier. By the way I'll be wearing the "Keep Foxy in Jail T-Shirt" soon....

The Outlaw Reunion: Love and Light to the Fallen Soldiers

Posted by supersize spanishfly on Tuesday, December 18, 2007 , under , | comments (0)

My people, mi gente...This past Saturday December I was privileged to be a part of a very special event; The 1st Annual 2007 Annual Outlaw Reunion of NYC Outlaws. I was able to bear witness to an effort worthy (as Ras said) of the Nobel Peace prize. There was a huge turn out as members from various gangs came out to show support and love to each other. The love that hate made, as my man NYOIL would say.
I looked around the room and found it hard to believe...

that at one time, long ago, that there was hate between these people. I watched as members of one gang greeted another with warm friendly smiles and they hugged and embraced. It was as if I were at a Family reunion. I suppose that is exactly what it was.

They may have been at odds at one time, long ago, but now they were joined together by the love for the culture that they created and have preserved for over 30 years if not more. The culture that they watched evolve from a destructive force in their communities to a force of unity, hope and change for a better tomorrow for their children, who by the way, were out in full force wearing their outlaw leathers and rocking their colors. The message they now convey to their young and the youth in general is one of love and light and that violence is never an answer.

As The Mexican blared through the speakers the outlaws took to the floor uprocking and popping and having a wonderful time, living , loving and laughing. Mi gente, I could not help myself I laughed like a jolly old Santa to watch them let loose and wild out. I must admit some of them still got the moves. I ain't mad.

Did I mention there was food galore? Oh you know I had to SUPERSIZE, we had arroz con guandules, potato salad, roasted duck, pernil, macaroni salad, baked ziti, green salad, yellow rice. pork fried rice and CHICKEN WINGS!! And my people showed my table crazy love. Thanks to Emma from E2K Magazine and my cousin Angie for coming out to help serve the brothers and sisters. And thanks to the brothers who brang the pernil, rice and roasted duck and that yummy potato salad.

Then we got the panel popping. My people, I was truly moved to watch as each member of each gang introduced themselves and gave love and respect to the other crews and thanked everyone present, giving each other the utmost respect. The moment that moved me the most, was when Lori requested a moment of silence for the fallen soldiers. The entire bar stood silent , some people lit their lighters and I saw tears fill the eyes of some of the most intimidating of the outlaws. I saw the wear and tear of the violence that dominated their lives. Oh the pain to remember the fallen ones. I felt the heaviness of their hearts for that moment. I heard some of them whisper prayers for the fallen soldiers. I felt a chill down my spine and I knew that the spirits of their fallen soldiers were there, watching , listening, pleased with the the acknowledgement and the positivity. At the end of the moment of silence, in unison, the entire club let out a cheer. Oh yes, it is good to remember.

We must never forget the casualties of the street wars. Their absence serves as a reminder that we must not let violence and negativity rule our lives and destroy our communities. Rest In Peace to all the fallen soldiers and soldierettes (that one was for the sisters, I know you feel me Lori)

Lori had said "If we knew then what we know now." My sister, it may have taken a long time to come but enlightenment is bliss and it may not come when we want it to come but it comes right on time. Peace, blessings, love and light to all the gangs who participated in the reunion and came in peace and donated to the cause. I also appreciated the love my food got that night...everyone eats around me.

The 1st Annual 2007 Annual Outlaw Reunion Of NYC Outlaws will not be the last and may the other states follow in suit.
Thank you to all of the brothers and sisters of the Outlaw culture who attended this historical event and most of all my people, mi gente, mi familia...thank you for turning a negative into a positive by trying to heal your hoods. God bless.

Peace, love and much respect

Latinos in the Bay Area - Scweez, meet latinos in the South - Chingo Bling. Im Latino, but I am a bit confused on this one. Scweez has the look but he is pumping the Hyphy movement, and he sounds somewhat like Master P. Meanwhile - Chingo is his usual and unique self. I hope that Latinos will eventually get the Identity thing right in Hip Hop. It seems like we are half way there - but not there yet. Perhaps it will take more time! Never the less it is good to see Chingo back on the scene, and Latinos back in Hip Hop

Video & Link: What Determines Musical Popularity? The Old Rules No Longer Apply

Posted by Ras on , under | comments (0)

MTV continues to cover The Future of Music, and they share the same sentiments as I discussed just yesterday regarding the music business. Billboard is even acknowledging in the article and video how CD sales and Radio spins are becoming less relevant to success of an act today. They are finally admitting that YouTube numbers, Myspace, Blogs, and Podcasts are far more relevant today than they were 1 year ago.

In addition, the article interviews Steve Stoute who claims to be working on something top secret at the moment to measure the culture impact of an artist. In the article he is quoted saying:

"Nobody's found a way to measure cultural impact," he said, "and I think the entertainment business needs to look at which artists on their roster may not sell the most records, but have a tremendous value in commerce."

That value could be measured in the number of blog or gossip-column mentions, how many spins a record got in clubs or even a snapshot of the "pass-along" value of music, a measure used in the magazine world to set advertising rates based on estimates of how many times a magazine is passed from a subscriber to someone else.

We will see who will be the first company to successfully create a system of measure digitally for artists. This will be key in any artists digital efforts.

I regularly check our Community site daily and stumble across some great talent from our listeners who regularly blog and post on our forums. This week's featured Blogger of EG Radio is our man Melo Chico (Pictured Left) who is from London and is actually a Latino. That is wild. I have been to the UK 3 times and found no hint of Sazon or Adobo over there! Check out his Community Profile here, and be sure to read his blog below regarding who broke his Hip Hop Virginity?

Who Broke My Hip Hop Virginity?
By Melo Chico
Que pasa people! I just thought bout this the other day, what was my first hip hop album i bought....bootlegged! Mine was Redman's - Malpractice, and what a album that was. I mean
it had those funny fucking skits, with Jerry Swinger, the Judge Judy rip (haha!) it was just a great well thought out album, and it did exactly what it said on the front cover...Roller Coaster Malpractice!. It was like a story telling ride with Redman.

Maybe i miss that a little bit in the Hip Hop Game right now. The whole theres a theme to the album and that you really get and emphasize with the artist, and MAYBE that why I am feeling the new Talib Kweli album. ( i promise ill stop goin on about that album.) I mean i like the new stuff too, i don't want to be number one hater on eg community but i find it hard to listen to when all i hear is how rich you are ALL THE TIME! So stop talking bout rims and hummers cause i cant even afford the insurance hahaha!!

Much love chico45!
PS: Lynx if your reading this remember Redman is a lover of big women..get him on point

Reverend Al. Sharpton is being investigated by the feds. They seem to think that he commited tax fraud. An article in one paper even said that he has a mistress. They say she is the cause of his separation with his wife. Let's get to the stuff i want to know. Who in the world is his hairstylist and can we find the person and incarcerate him or her. Who in the world besides James Brown (who is dead now) thinks that it looks good. Isn't a perm in the same class as a jeri curl and a mullet. He needs atleast a shapeup and a goatee. Prison time for Al wont be a hardship, he did time before for that Vieques thing. Puerto ricans love Al for that, we even throw Al Sharpton parties filled with media coverage, yellow tape and white chalk and Ambulances. I love me some Al Sharpton....40master

The Year 2007: When The Music Business Broke, & Online Album Leaks, Bloggers, and Social Networking Prevailed (Part 1)

The year 2007 was a terrible year for the business of music, but a great year for the popularity and promotion of music! It was the year when The Music Business Broke and The CD Died, but Online Album Leaks, Bloggers, and Social Networking Prevailed creating an exceptionally popular demand in music than ever before!

It was the first year I saw Internet Album leaks result in improving CD sales as they were leaked weeks before their official releases and then CD sales shot up. Case in point were album releases by Talib Kweli, Kanye West, and Common Sense. All of the albums in which leaked on the net weeks before its Billboard debut, and all of which debuted at number 1 in their first week of sales. In addition, the music business finally gave up on the CD as the main source of revenue, and they moved to marketing ring tones which are more profitable. Overall - the Business of Music was smacked in the face in 2007 in terms of sales, but the consumers of music have never seen a more exciting time.

To add insult to injury, MTV recently wrote an excellent article on some of the negative trends that occurred in the music industry this year entitled "The Year the Music Industry Broke". Included in the article was a timeline of things that occured in 2007 that adversely impacted the Industry. Specifically - they detailed the terrible decisions that were made to attack sites like Oinked and the petty lawsuits against peer to peer file sharers. In addition, they talked about the shift of artists who gave their albums out for free on the web and dropped their labels, as well as reviewing the poor decisions being made to control and regulate Internet Radio.

In the entire article - there was one common theme which was "Failure" and "Demise of The Old Music Industry". Primarily because the seasoned veterans who run this business can not understand the Digital Era.

In this Editorial Style review, I will outline what strategies labels will need to embrace and employ to move from an Offline company to one that is Online! This is a first part of a 2 part series. With the first part outlining 3 New Opportunities Labels can take advantage of now to survive in the Digital Era.

3 Things Labels Can Do To Save Their Business in 2008.

#1 - Hire More Internet Savvy Executives & CEOs -

Get rid of the old and in with the New! Executives at labels in 2007 made some terrible decisions in 2007. From Universal's reluctance to renegotiate their deal with iTunes and the start of their own store, to CEO of Universal Music Doug Morris' disasterous interview with Wired Magazine.

Unfortunately - the seasoned veterans who sold millions of records 20 years ago are becoming far more irrelevant in the Digital Age. Although you will still need a seasoned music industry veteran, the music industry needs to make room for a new type of Executive. Perhaps labels need more internet savvy Savvy executives to really get it right. Just look at the founder of FaceBook Mark Zuckerberg who is just 23 years old and is already a billionare because he focused on embracing a world of Social Networking and the simple concept of Sharing rather than working against it.

Bottom line is that labels should value experience and tenure, but invest more in experienced technology professionals who have been sucessful in deploying online strategies in the Media and Entertainment space. The people in this business today are too focused on the accomplishments of 5 years ago so they can stay in position. Besides - especially in Hip Hop - it is all the same players (Russell, Diddy, Jay Z, 50 Cent, Dre, etc). Its time for new blood and get the new execs in!! Labels should fire the old school executives who can't develop or support Digital strategies succesfully. Perhaps we can start with Doug Morris!

#2 - Spend More Marketing & Promotional Dollars on Internet Radio, Blogging, Podcasting, and File Sharing.

Just last week I had the opportunity to meet with 2 Major record companies regarding a new project I am involved with for a new recording artist. I could not help but notice that many of the folks in the room were not only great at what they did in promoting music over the radio and print medias, but all of them had very succesful track records in the past with Marketing a project. What was missing was the knowledge of deploying a more rigourous digital strategy to market music. A Majority of the plan and budget discussed was based on Terrestial Radio strategies, Street Promotion, Getting Spins, Mixtape Circuit strategy, and more traditional outlets of bringing new music to market.

When it came to Internet Marketing and Promotion - that was where EG Radio and myself came in. However, the monies being spent in this area accounted for less than 10% of the overall budget. Perhaps - it will be the other way around next year?
It is very apparent that today's seasoned veterans in the music business concern themselves more with Nielson Soundscan numbers which track Terrestial FM Radio, and CD Sales. While these mediums can be still relevant, they are quickly declining! Yet - companies are spending large amounts of cash into these mediums. Recommendation #2 is for Record Labels to shift the amount of money they spend going into these traditional mediums and to allocate more money into promoting new music on Internet Radio, Blog Sites, Podcasting, and File Sharing - all of which - provide a means of tracking the popularity of the music.

Why not use PirateBay or any of the BitTorrent services to put an album out for 2 months prior to its official release to get a baseline of its Internet Popularity? Give it away at a lower bit rate for free - for a period of 3 weeks - and determine how many downloads it gets and compare that to comparable Internet Releases on BitTorrent. Just look at 50 Cent vs. Kanye West's BitTorrent numbers prior to their official releases on September 11th, and you would of already known that Kanye was going to clearly outsell 50 Cent. Primarily because the BitTorrent numbers prior to their release were somewhere in the ball park of a 3 to 1 ratio. If a label were to Google the 2 Albums on the Internet, they would of saw that more people linked to Kanye's Graduation Leak than that of 50 Cent's. A great way to measure an albums potential success without paying Nielson or BDS services.

Why put your promotional dollars on payola for DJs when you have Internet Radio DJ's wanting more to connect with the artist and will play them for nearly next to nothing. All the while - Internet Radio is still trackable. Just check out sites like RadioWaveMonitor.Com and Live365 who track not only what is played, but how many times its played and who is playing it.

Why spend money on print, when there are far more popular Blogs and Internet sites that have communities of consumers of music that when combined - reach more viewers than major publications like Vibe, and Rolling Stone Magazine?

I can only hope that industry veterans will finally see that the traditional investments made in promoting music will provide less of a return on investment, and in 2008 they should be willing to pay popular blogs, BitTorrent sites, and Internet Radio DJs for Advertisements on their web sites and more effective promotional campaigns. Paying 3 - 5 popular internet radio shows, and blogs on the internet will cost you about the same as a 1/2 page ad in the Vibe Magazine. The difference is that you have a better chance of reaching more people online than through print. It is time that labels take their promotional dollars online vs. the traditional mediums.

#3 - Create A Better Connection Between Artist & The Audience - Radio Head takes the award this year for dropping their label, and distributing their music in a Pay What You Want model. This slapped Music Execs in the face, while RadioHead still retained their fans, and proved to the world they could still sell music without a record label. Additionally, Madonna said it best when she ended her 25 year relationship with Warner Brothers this year. She went on to say - "For the first time in my career, the way that my music can reach my fans is unlimited." She then stated that "The possibilities are endless. Who knows how my albums will be distributed in the future?".

In addition to addressing the alternative ways to distribute music, labels will need to do a better job of creating a better connection between the artist and the audience. The red tape and restrictions associated with distributing music on the internet has forced several artists to realize that there has to be a better way to market music, and obviously the labels are not doing a good job at it.

One barrier that was removed by dropping the labels in both Madonna's and RadioHead's case - was that the relationship between the Artist and Consumer is much closer. The connection is established not only by making their music more easily available, but by making the experience an interactive one that creates a better connection between the artist and their fans. Just like RadioHead offered their fans a Pay What You Want Model, other artists can offer their fans to pick their next single off their web site.

Other strategies can include enabling producers to remix a song off the album by giving away the acappella version of their songs on an artist's web site. Some other ways are to create a Social Community web site like Lindoro Entertainment/Universal Recording Artist Jimmy Flavorr. Jimmy is a Latin Hip Hop recording artist breaking into the business today. Through Jimmy Flavorr's Social Community site - fans and industry contacts can chat with eachother, chat with Jimmy, rate his tracks, upload photos, music, and videos directly through his web site. This creates the ultimate experience for the fan, and even if your not a fan of Jimmy's music - you will immediately appreciate the community he has going on his web site.

By creating a better connection, you create a community of consumers you increase your brand awareness and demand for a product. That demand will ultimately ultimately result in better sales of the product to the masses. However - the commitment to follow through on Social Campaigns must be present prior to the release of an album, as well as after the release.

So there are my 3 New Opportunities Labels can take advantage of now to survive in the Digital Era which can move them from an Offline Company to Online. Stay tuned for Part 2 of How the Music Industry can move from Offline to Online!

TV Industry Using Piracy as a Measure of Success

Posted by Ras on , under | comments (1)

You heard us talk about the music industry intentionally leaking music to get a buzz and increase sales, but it appears the TV industry is embracing BitTorrent and Piracy and using it as a measure of success. Nielson (A Company that provides information on Radio and Broadcasting views) is no longer the only form of measurement. Sites like YouTube, Pirate Bay, and several others will be the new system of measurement. Last100 has an interesting post describing the way in which "unofficial" but sanctioned BitTorrent leaks are being used to measure a TV show's likely success.

Link: Jay Z Talks To Billboard About His Future at Def Jam & 26 Grammy Nominations

Posted by Ras on , under | comments (0)

Jay Z talks to Billboard about 26 Grammy Nominations for Def Jam, Rhianna, 360 Deals, his future at Def Jam and more. When asked about his exit from Def Jam, he confirms that it is not about the money, but instead about the state of the music business. He states:

The rumors are about only because my contract is up. If we can work something out that's beneficial to all parties involved, we'll see. But it's not about money. It's really about trying to invest in the future, trying to invest in maybe coming up with a new model. Because going in hard making records with artists and throwing those records into a system that's flawed is not exciting for me... It's just that the model of selling CDs has changed... My whole thing is, how do we invest in the future? If everyone is committed to doing that, then I'm sure there's a deal to be made.

Audio: Interview with King Klast of ClassicNYStreetGangs.Com

Posted by Ras on , under | comments (1)

Check out this exclusive interview with my man King Klast who is the founder of Classic New York Street Gangs.Com. Many say that King Klast has done the impossible by bringing over 30 rival gangs who once ruled the streets of New York City in the early 70s, and 80s - to unite on his web site. Not even the police, or any government authority could have done that back in those days let alone - today. However - a young and aspiring genius from the Sunset Park area of Brooklyn did exactly that, and his efforts are noble peace prize worthy!!

Through his web site he has connected and re-connected hundreds of members of the Outlaw Community to communicate, network, and pay respects to the Outlaw Culture that still lives.

Listen to Klast tell all about how he started the site, his
influences, how he got two rival gang members to make peace through
his web site, how he formed the 1st Annual Outlaw Reunion in Brooklyn,
and much more!

Be sure to visit his site at http://www.classicnystreetgangs.com/.

G - Unit is looking for a Promotions team and the Candidates must be atleast 17 years old, must have access to a digital camera, a computer, and Internet Access. Long gone are the days of 2 Turntables, a Mic, CD, and The Studio!

Crack Dealers May Come Home Early

Posted by supersize spanishfly on , under , | comments (0)

My people, mi gente...The U.S. Sentencing Commission's have finally decided to ease sentencing guidelines for crack dealers. You see, my people, crack is cheaper and more potent than powder cocaine so you can be sure that it is mostly monorities that are imprisioned for dealing crack. From what I understand if a person is caught dealing 5 grams of cocaine they will get five years but you could have 500 grams of cocaine and you would get the same minimum.??? The new ruling allows federal juges to use discretion in giving shorter sentences to reduce the disparity between crack and powder cocaine.
Well, I guess that's good news for the

almost 20,000 incarcerated crack dealers since the U.S. Sentencing Commissions decided yesterday to make the new law retroactive...translation- early release for all the ex street pharmacists. Check out the details
